Biographical Sketch

Gary Smith

Dr. Gary Smith is Professor of Population Biology and Epidemiology and currently Chief of the Section of Epidemiology and Public Health in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He also has a secondary appointment in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine. Originally from England where he was awarded degrees from the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and York, Dr. Smith has worked in the United States since 1986. His research deals with epidemiology and population dynamics of infectious diseases in humans and wild and domestic animal species. He has worked on rabies in raccoons, intestinal worm infections in cattle and sheep, Lyme disease and parasitic infections in people, viral diseases in chickens, fish and dogs, the geography of heart worm infections and the development of drug resistance. He lives in Kennett Square and is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the newly-formed Kennett Amateur Theatrical Society (KATS Inc.).
