Pinelands Field Trip

Members traveled to the Pinelands of New Jersey to view the cranberry harvest at Pine Island Cranberry Co., Hogwallow, Burlington County, New Jersey. New Jersey is the third largest cranberry producing state in the nation, following Massachusetts and Wisconsin. Pine Island is a family owned operation that has been in the Haines family for almost 120 years. Each year it produces over 240,000 barrels of cranberries. Cranberries require a unique ecosystem in order to thrive, including abundant fresh water and sandy soils. The pinelands are uniquely suited to this production. The Society also visited the Philip Maruei Agricultural Experiment Station where research is conducted to improve cranberry production.
